Commercial Polymer Identification Card-2
Although polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is defined as a recyclable polymer, it causes large deposits in nature due to its use in the production of short-term products. In addition to its resistance to enzymatic degradation due to the polymer chain structure, its hydrophobic nature and crystalline structure limit the biodegradability of the polymer. The fact that its production still relies on a high amount of petroleum-based raw materials also limits its sustainability. Academic and industrial studies continue for the biodegradability and sustainability of PET materials.
