Characterization of Polymers-1
Series 1: Molecular structure characterization
FTIR and NMR methods are the most preferred analysis methods.
✴ FTIR analysis;
- It is an environmentally friendly analysis method that can be applied easily and without the use of chemicals.
- Basic characterization of all polymers can be done with this method.
- The functional group amounts can be determined by using sufficient library data and special programs instead of titration methods.
- The purity of the material can not be determined exactly, but basically the structural bonds contained in the product and their relative amounts can be easily determined.
✴ NMR analysis;
- The molecular structure of the material can be fully determined, soluble polymers can be analyzed by H NMR and/or C NMR, and insoluble polymers can be analyzed by Solid State NMR.
- The purity of the polymer or whether it is a mixture (hybrid, etc.) can be determined and the amounts of the structures that forming the polymer can be determined relatively.
- Depending on the polymer structure, it is possible to calculate the approximate molecular weight of the polymer by suitable methods.
